Impact windows and storm windows: choosing the right product
Start with the problem the opening needs to solve. A replacement impact-rated assembly and a secondary storm window serve different project needs.
Identify whether the main window is staying
A secondary storm window is added to an existing primary window. An interior or exterior storm-window project therefore starts with the condition of the existing window and a mounting location for the additional unit. An impact-window project concerns the performance of the complete installed window assembly, including the frame, glazing and attachment to the building.
Match the product to the required performance
If the goal is an additional layer at an existing opening, compare the appropriate interior and exterior storm-window options, mounting conditions and operation. Confirm the performance of the actual product being quoted. The term storm window alone does not establish hurricane-impact approval.
If the project requires impact resistance, identify the required approval and the permitted assembly. The model, dimensions, glass, pressure rating, anchoring and substrate must fit that approval. An impact-related family name or a laminated-glass description alone is insufficient to establish eligibility for a particular opening.
Measure for the selected product type
For a secondary storm unit, identify the intended mounting surface, existing frame condition, available depth and any obstruction to the primary sash or screen. Use the measuring instructions for that storm-window product. For a replacement impact assembly, document the wall opening and construction, then have the installer confirm the final frame size and approved attachment condition.
Keep the quote request specific
- Tell us whether the existing primary window will stay or be replaced.
- Provide the address, opening photographs, quantities and approximate sizes.
- Describe the goal, such as adding a secondary window or meeting specified impact criteria.
- Include the design requirements or approval criteria already supplied for the project.
